Ecology
Ecology,
derived from the Greek words oikos
(home) and logos (to study), is the scientific study of the
interactions between organisms and their environments. Ecology
is also concerned with the distribution and abundance of life.
The environment of an organism includes abiotic factors, such as
temperature, light, water, geology, and nutrients. Just as
important in their effects on organisms are biotic factors: all the
other organisms that share a particular environment with that
organism.
